Tiki-Kate got into carving in 2006, thanks to a series of carving get-togethers called "chops," where people get together to carve and share ideas and techniques. For years, she made it to all of the chops, even though they happened nearly every month and were hours away from her home.
Purist that she was, she refused to use any power tools when she was carving. She used chisels, which were more time consuming, but more traditional.
Kate's carvings were inspired by the imagery she loved most: tikis from the Enchanted Tiki Room, her favorite tiki mugs, and even carvings she saw around Southern California.
Kate set up the breakfast nook area of her kitchen as a carving area, so that she could pick up a chisel at any time.
